The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
