The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable with a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can anticipate a new entry in this legendary franchise.
