The Compassion of Strangers: The Way a Man I Had Just Met Supported Me Obtain the Position That Transformed My Existence

In the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Since my travel mate was considering pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had arranged a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I did, and I told him that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – adjacent to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a position with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The engineering student came up to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but right away explained to my host that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she responded: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for three years. A perk of the job was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his identity, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in multiple respects. I would never have had the bravery or self-assurance to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and request employment. And, I had always wanted to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that role at the university paved the way for a role in Europe where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
