The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies represent an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

The growing disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
